11:00 am - 12:00 pm | 17/04/2024

Join Matthew Williams, lecturer, writer and broadcaster, as he discusses the life and work of William Burges, a genius who created some of the most extraordinary buildings of the 19th-century, including Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch.  Discover more about Burges’ eccentric world and his amazing creations.

Visit the Conservation Studio at Glamorgan Archives to learn more about our ongoing project to conserve the extensive collection of Burges’ drawings and plans, which were produced for the Marquis of Bute and recently transferred to the Archives from Cardiff Castle. This project is funded by the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust.

Matthew Williams trained as an art and architectural historian before undertaking postgraduate Museum Studies.  A recognised expert in the work of the designer William Burges, he was the Curator of Cardiff Castle for many years and has published widely in art and architectural journals.  He lectures on the subject of design and is especially interested in that of the 19th and 20th centuries.  He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 2019.

This event will be held in person at Glamorgan Archives.

Matthew Williams’ lecture will start at 11am.  Tours of the Conservation Studio will be offered at 10.30, 12 and 12.20.  We will contact you separately to arrange a time.
