Unmarried Motherhood, Maternity Homes, and the 100 Year Legacy of the Adoption Act in South Wales

Unmarried Motherhood, Maternity Homes, and the 100 Year Legacy of the Adoption Act in South Wales

11:00 am-12:00 pm | 24/07/2026

Join Ellie Gregory as she explores the experiences of unmarried mothers in South Wales between 1910 and 1921 through records from Cardiff Salvation Army maternity homes.

We’ll discover why women entered these homes, the challenges they faced, and how society viewed unmarried motherhood at the time.

Drawing on original archival sources, this talk reveals how maternity homes could provide both care and control, and shows that many of the attitudes surrounding adoption existed long before the 1926 Adoption of Children Act. It also asks an important question: how far have we really come in our attitudes towards unmarried mothers, adoption, and family since then?

This event will be held in person at Glamorgan Archives.
