Join Tony Moon, Project Secretary of the Rhondda Tunnel Society, as he discusses the history of the Rhondda Tunnel and its future as Europe’s longest walking / cycling tunnel.
The Rhondda Tunnel was built to export Rhondda steam coal via the ports of Swansea Bay. It was never a great commercial success because coal had to be hauled to the top of the Rhondda before it could go downhill, making other routes down the valleys more attractive. The talk describes how it was built, and then closed in 1968 due to distortion in the roof. When it was closed, the headstone above the Rhondda entrance was lost, but that stone has played a pivotal role in the campaign to re-open it to become the world’s longest continuously open walking / cycling tunnel.
